Finding Creative Focus in Chaos

May 11, 2020

In this webinar, Morgan Baden, Nicola Krauss, and Nisha Sharma, all published authors and industry experts get candid about how tough it can be to focus on creative projects right now, and how aspiring writers can find balance—and maybe even inspiration—in the turmoil. Writers can expect practical tips on how to hone in on your creative priorities—and how to find professional help if you need it.

They discuss why they’re having difficulty focusing right now and compare it to previous times they’ve struggled. They learned a lot of lessons that are useful in this moment like:

  1. Acknowledge that physiologically there are times when you’re not in the right mindset to write. Nicola suggests creating a transitionary moment between when you are stressed, like when you go grocery shopping, to when you’re ready to sit down to write. If you’re into meditation, this would be a great time to help you calm down.
  2. Use structure and habits to make sure that you’re continuing your writing schedule. Nisha suggests getting up at the same time, drinking coffee at the same time and heading to your “office” at the same time that you used to, and you might find it easier to get through your deadlines.
  3. Give yourself grace and know that you not working at 100% right now is okay. As a creative writing lead for an agency, Morgan knows that publishers and agents are a bit more understanding of pushing back deadlines or turning in weaker drafts than you normally would submit. Everyone is going through a tough time right now and that’s ok!

They then go through 5 ways to stay focused on creative projects:

  1. Find a community
  2. Seek out joy
  3. Try something new
  4. Try something old
  5. Be bad

Learn how Morgan, Nicola and Nisha have been using these 5 ways to meet upcoming deadlines!
